Hope in Mission in the World
2007 Allocations

The Rev. Connie DiLeo serves as a missionary of the UM General Board of Global Ministries in the Dominican Republic. The poverty in the small villages throughout the countryside often meant that most children were unable to attend school due to the shortage of schools and lack of money to purchase books and clothing. Through the efforts of some committed individuals over the last 15 years, there are now schools in Bombita and LaHoya where children are taught skills that help them to go on to live self-sufficient lives. This has made a significant impact on the two communities where they are located. School assemblies bring Bible stories and teaching of Christ to life; youth groups and an after school program give moral guidance. A health clinic is now open in the two villages where students receive health education and basic services. There is still much work to be done, but God has accomplished great things through this tremendous effort that is aided by committed partners. Hope has joined in this commitment. We are sponsoring one school child in LaHoya at $10 per month (we’ll be receiving a picture that we’ll share!). We are sending an additional $500 to be spent where Connie sees the greatest need. (For example there is great need for donations for a roof for one or more families. Many of the homes still have thatched roofs and dirt floors. When it rains the floors become mud. On average, it costs approximately $200 per roof.)
